Nimonic 80A Forged Rings and Discs: Creep-Rupture Strength for Gas Turbine Rotors and Casings

Nimonic 80A (UNS N07080) is a precipitation-hardened nickel-chromium alloy strengthened by additions of titanium and aluminium, originally developed for exhaust valves and now a mainstay of the gas-turbine industry. Its combination of high creep-rupture strength, good oxidation resistance up to 815 °C and stable microstructure makes it the preferred material for forged rings and discs subjected to sustained centrifugal and thermal loads.

Composition and Strengthening Mechanism

The nominal chemistry includes 18–21 % chromium, 1,0–1,8 % titanium, 1,0–1,8 % aluminium, and a minimum of 58 % nickel, with controlled cobalt and carbon. Strength derives from the γ′ phase Ni₃(Ti,Al) precipitated during ageing at 700 °C after solution treatment near 1080 °C. This intermetallic phase resists coarsening at service temperature, preserving creep resistance throughout the component life.

Mechanical Properties

In the fully heat-treated condition Nimonic 80A typically offers a tensile strength above 950 MPa and a yield strength near 600 MPa, with elongation of at least 25 %. Its creep-rupture capability — roughly 200 MPa for 100 hours at 750 °C — is the property that defines its value in rotating hardware. Forged rings retain directional grain flow, improving fatigue performance compared with machined-from-billet equivalents.

Applications in Turbomachinery

Forged rings and discs of Nimonic 80A are used for gas-turbine rotor spacers, compressor casings, seal rings, and bolting exposed to elevated temperature. The alloy is equally suited to turbine blades and turbine-disc rim sections where creep and low-cycle fatigue dominate the design. Its good machinability and weldability (with matching filler) support complex fabrications for aero-engine and land-based power modules.

Forging, Testing and Supply

We supply Nimonic 80A forged rings and discs produced by open-die and ring-rolling processes, with full solution and ageing treatment to AMS 5766 / BS HR201. Every forging is verified by ultrasonic examination, macro- and micro-grain inspection, and mechanical testing. Mill certificates to EN 10204 3.1 and a complete heat-treatment record accompany each delivery, ensuring traceability for safety-critical turbine components.
